You've got mail fraud: DCX dragged into mail scam

As if the Nigerian fund wiring scheme wasn't bad enough, DaimlerChrysler is now finding themselves involved in a similar snail-mail scam. DCX's financial services unit has been working its butt off to warn people to steer clear of a mail scam that seems to be using the company's good name to dupe would-be thousandaires.

Letters from the so-called Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission in Canada have been arriving in mailboxes congratulating recipients on winning $170,000. These announcements even come with fake checks for $2,260 as part of the ploy. And here's the worst bit, and the reason we are covering it on automk, the checks name "DaimlerChrysler Services" and "DaimlerChrysler Services Truck Finance" as the issuer.

The way the scam works is that the "winner" is asked to deposit the phony check and then wire a similar amount to the lottery commission to "finalize the payment process." As you can probably already guess, nothing is ever deposited, but the $2,260 does disappear from the "winner's" account.

DaimlerChrysler has posted alerts on its websites at www.daimlerchryslerfinancialservices.com/na and www.dctruckfinancial.com. It is also urging victims to overcome their shame and file a consumer fraud complaint with the Federal Trade Commission by calling 877-FTC-HELP or by visiting www.ftc.gov. They promise not to laugh in your face. Come on people, we hate to kick you while you're down, but please check out any "win" thoroughly before providing info, and remember that no legitimate sweeps, lottery or contest will make you pay for your prize like that.
